Summary of Movie

As Fullmetal Alchemist enters its second season, Ed and Al pursue the rumor that the inhabitants of Ishbal created a Philosopher’s Stone without using alchemy. If the Elrics can learn how it was accomplished, they may be able to restore their bodies without harming anyone. After an unrewarding trip with Winrey, the Elric Brothers meet the one person they fear: Izumi, their old alchemy instructor. The filmmakers intercut the Brothers’ present encounter with Izumi and flashbacks of their early training, suggesting the ongoing journey to mastery of their art. But episodes 27 and 28 suffer from a cultural gap. Izumi is modeled on a traditional Zen master: she gave Ed and Al the koan “All Is One, One Is All” to unravel to test their worthiness as pupils. But in place of the slap Zen masters sometimes administer, she beats the Elrics savagely and needlessly. To Americans, Izumi acts not like a wise disciplinarian, but a brutal sadist. Summary of Movie

Spectacular cinematography used in an innovative framework featuring noted actor and native Egyptian Omar Sharif provide a highly entertaining glimpse of ancient Egypt in this documentary from National Geographic. Sharif, playing a grandfather who is explaining the archeological wonders to his inquisitive granddaughter, does a fine job of explaining such puzzles as how the pyramids would have been built and what knowledge their builders must have possessed. The interludes between grandfather and granddaughter are handled well, but the star of the production is Egypt itself. Gorgeously composed shots linger over the pyramids, the Sphinx, and a plethora of temples, and a camera flown over the Nile provides stunning footage of the great river’s meanderings. Reenactments of events, such as the building of the pyramids, the burial of King Tut, and the 1922 opening of his tomb, are presented intelligently. This production is sure to spark curiosity about ancient Egypt, and even without the careful handling of the history it would probably be worth watching just for the wondrous cinematography. A bonus at the end of the tape is a making-of documentary detailing how the film was shot on location. –Robert J. McNamara

This is a jolly coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy named Laurent Chevalier who is growing up in bourgeois surroundings in Dijon, France. This is France in the mid-1950s rather than America in the 1990s. Thus, Laurent is unharmed by events which would irreparably shatter the self-esteem of a modern American adolescent: he gets drunk, he smokes, he has sex (including incestuous sex), he is smothered by his mother, he is ignored by his father, a priest makes a pass at him, he gets rheumatoid fever, etc. There’s enough scandalous behavior in this film to make 100 made-for-TV movies, and yet this is a very happy and oddly innocent tale.
